ISS oxygen generator repair fails
Posted: Sat, Sep 11, 2004, 5:12 PM ET (2112 GMT)
ISS illustration (NASA) Efforts by the ISS crew to repair a broken oxygen generator failed Friday when the generator broke down shortly after the repair was completed. The two-man Expedition Nine crew tried to repair a Russian-made Elektron oxygen generator that failed earlier in the week because of a problem with a gas analysis mechanism. The crew was able to get the generator running, but it broke down again after about an hour. Station managers said the crew will wait until Monday before making another effort to repair the generator, which creates oxygen from waste water. The failure does not pose an immediate problem to the crew, which has alternate means of generating oxygen for at least several weeks.
