MRO images Martian avalanche
Posted: Tue, Mar 4, 2008, 6:19 AM ET (1119 GMT)
MRO image of avalanche (NASA/JPL) A NASA spacecraft has taken the first images of an avalanche taking place on the surface of Mars. The images, taken by a high-resolution camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft on February 19, show clouds of debris at the base of a slope in the planet's far northern regions. Scientists believe blocks of material, probably more ice than rock, fell down the slope, but are unsure what triggered the landslide. The images were part of a collection of 2,400 MRO images released on Monday.
