China launches research satellites

Long March 4B launch of 03 Group of SJ-6 satellites (Xinhua) A Long March rocket launched a pair of experimental research satellites on Saturday. The Long March 4B lifted off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China at 9:15 pm EDT Friday (0115 GMT, 9:15 am Beijing Time Saturday) and placed into orbit the "03 Group" of Shijian-6 research satellites. The mission of the two small spacecraft was not reported by Chinese media other than to perform "environmental exploration"; previous Shijian-6 satellites have been used to monitor the space environment. The launch was announced only about 24 hours in advance.
