LAS CRUCES - The Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District is seeking public comments on a study, known as an environmental assessment, that evaluates impacts to public lands in Doña Ana and Sierra counties for proposed road improvements on a southern road to Spaceport America.

The EA is available at www.blm.gov/nm/lascruces for public review and comment by Feb. 25, according to a BLM news release.

The purpose of the EA is to assess the potential effects of proposed improvements along a 23.6-mile section of county roads E-070, E-071, E-072 in Doña Ana County and A-013 in Sierra County.

The Southern Road Improvement Project is proposed by Doña Ana and Sierra counties, in partnership with the New Mexico Spaceport Authority. The project would be funded with New Mexico State funds administered by the NMSA. Other participating agencies with interests include the State Land Office, which is a land owner in the area, and the National Park Service, which administers the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail, in partnership with the BLM. Several private landowners are also stakeholders.

Comments on the EA can be emailed to BLM_NM_LCDO_Comments@blm.gov with a subject line of “Southern Road Improvement Project,” or in writing to the BLM Las Cruces District Office, Attn: Anthony Hom, 1800 Marquess Street, Las Cruces, NM 88001. Comments, and any personal information provided with them, are part of the administrative file and are treated as public information.
