The Georgia House on Wednesday gave final approval to legislation seen as vital to the state’s pursuit of a space port in southeast Georgia.

The House voted 151-6 to approve House Bill 1. Sponsored by Rep. Jason Spencer, R-Woodbine, the bill would limit the liability of any company involved in the launch of a spaceship in Georgia.

Officials in Camden County along the Georgia coast want to attract a private spaceport. Helping to absolve companies of all but gross negligence is seen as a key part of any attempt to land the project.

Spencer on Wednesday said HB 1 needed just one more push.

“This will be the last stage of the rocket to descend to the governor’s desk,” Spencer said, alluding to the fact his bill is now headed to Gov. Nathan Deal to sign or veto.
