The founder of an aerospace company based in Las Cruces is facing charges of fraud and embezzlement, according to court records.

Dumitru Popesu, CEO of the ARCA Space Corporation, was arrested in Jonesboro, Georgia, on Wednesday and was extradited to Las Cruces.

Popescu was charged with one count of forgery, and 13 counts of fraud for different amounts of money, the lowest being $500 and the highest being $20,000. He was also charged with five counts of embezzlement.

It is unclear if the charges stem from his work at the aerospace company.

In 2015, ARCA revealed the ArcaBoard, a first of its kind flying hoverboard that went into production last year and retails for $14,900.

This is a developing story. We will update this article when more information becomes available.

KFOX14 reached out to the City of Las Cruces to ask about tax incentives given to ARCA, a spokesperson said the case is under investigation.
