The research in space technologies has resulted in spinoff benefits across a multitude of areas and its transference to the industry and other sectors has contributed towards the technological growth/self reliance, societal benefits and national development, said P. Kunhikrishnan, Director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre – SHAR, Sriharikota.

Delivering the convocation address at the eighth convocation ceremony of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) at Mahati Auditorium here on Saturday, Mr. Kunhikrishnan elucidated on the spinoff technologies being developed or transferred by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the medical field and remarked that the engineering and technological advances have played a major role in medical discoveries and their clinical translation since the invention of X-rays.

“Development of Polyurethane (PU) foams for rocket motor applications has resulted in an important spinoff in the form of artificial foot prosthesis. A miniaturised and compact Left Ventricle Assist Device (LVAD), a mechanical rotatory pump developed by ISRO, helps the left ventricle of a weak human heart to pump blood to the body. Several such spinoffs, in addition to the advancements and technological breakthroughs in the medical field, has a lot to offer to the youngsters to carry out multidisciplinary research,” he added.

He further recollected his graduation days and urged the future doctors to utilise this new phase for implementation of their knowledge and develop humility and empathy towards the patients. “Doctors are the first thought of a person in pain and a qualified medical professionals should abide and commit oneself to ethical principles/values, utilising the knowledge and skills for the benefit of the society. There is also a need to track the latest developments and update your knowledge base,” he maintained.

Earlier, SVIMS Director-cum-Vice Chancellor Dr. T.S. Ravikumar presented a detailed annual report on the activities at SVIMS and their upcoming developmental plans, particularly the ‘institutes of excellence’, accountable health systems and several such initiatives.

MCI president Dr. Jayashree P. Mehta, in the morning, inaugurated a PG hostel and ‘High Dose Radionuclide Ward’ at SVIMS.
