The satellites launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) can help identify terrain, availability of water and even possible places of ambush. These advances made in space technology would help police in execution of their tasks, said ISRO former chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar here on Saturday.
He was delivering the 22nd memorial lecture of late IPS officer K.S. Vyas at Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) auditorium on ‘Space Technology and Maintenance of Law and Order’. Efforts have been on for a tie-up with strategic and para-military forces to effectively utilise ISRO’s advancements through training programmes.
The data and information gathered by the satellites can be used for incident analysis. Already, the Delhi police were using the geo-spatial technology for crime-mapping and for predicting possible incidence of crime. “For the present requirements of the country, we need to double the number of communication satellites,” the ISRO former chairman observed. Retired IPS officer and former Hyderabad Police Commissioner M.V. Krishna Rao said the left wing extremism was completely controlled in some parts of the country.
However, 70% of the wealth in the world was in possession of mere 1% of people. Such conditions might revive the movements of CPI (Maoist), he said. Telangana DGP In-charge M. Mahender Reddy said technology advancements helped the police crush Maoists. “The newly recruited police personnel in Telangana would have a training module comprising topics of space technology and policing,” he said.
Retired IPS officers P.S. Rammohan Rao, Kamal Kumar, H.J. Dora, M.V. Krishna Rao, K. Aravind Rao and M. Ratan, and many serving IPS officers were present.
