David Beckham may have previously played for LA Galaxy, but that’s as close to space as he’ll be getting for a while.

The 43-year-old has dashed reports claiming he will be the first footballer in space, which is both entirely expected and quite disappointing at the same time.

It was alleged that David had been approached by a number of major space travel firms – they exist now, because it’s 2018 – including Virgin Atlantic’s fleet Virgin Galactic to go into space, and that the star had talked about it ‘for quite a while’.

A source told The Sun: ‘It has been mooted in the past but now space travel is becoming a more realistic prospect it could be a reality.

‘Some of David’s kids have been talking about it and think it would be pretty cool.

‘There aren’t many things he hasn’t done but this would be on another level – although he has admitted privately he’s very nervous about it.’

However, a rep for David told Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s not true.’

Well, we always said Becks was down to earth.

While David may not be going into the cosmos, there’s plenty of other stars already planning on mingling with actual stars when commercial space travel becomes a reality.

Back in 2004, Richard Branson announced his plans for Virgin Galactic Airlines, a spacecraft which will provide suborbital flights to space tourists for the sum of $200,000 (£157,000).

Celebrities who have already paid their deposits for the space flight include Ashton Kutcher, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry.

Maybe once David sees the guestlist, he’ll reconsider.
