NASA announced Thursday that there will be no need for a fourth space walk to repair the shuttle Discovery after the agency decided that the craft was in good shape to return to Earth Monday.

The US space agency had considered an additional space walk to repair parts of a thermal blanket that was torn near the cockpit window.

But NASA decided that the loose fibers do not pose a threat to the shuttle when it reenters the atmosphere early Monday, mission control in Houston, Texas announced.

"Soichi, we have good news," mission control told Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi, adding that the "blanket underneath the window is safe for return. No issue. Basically, no (space walk) EVA four."

Noguchi responded that that was, indeed, "good news."
