Shuttle mission to honor terror victims
By Amanda Barnett (CNN) -- The next space shuttle mission will honor victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. Nearly 6,000 U.S. flags will be carried into space by shuttle Endeavour and its seven-member crew, said NASA administrator Daniel Goldin. The flags will be returned to Earth and distributed to the victims' families and survivors of the attacks on New York, Pennsylvania and Washington. "NASA wanted to come up with an appropriate tribute to the people who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11," Goldin said in a statement. The program is called the "Flags for Heroes and Families" campaign. On Wednesday, Goldin presented the city of New York and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani with an U.S. flag carried into space on a previous shuttle flight. Endeavour is scheduled for liftoff on November 29 to deliver a new crew for the international space station.
