NASA gave the green light for the Discovery space shuttle to return to Earth Monday, after inspections showed no threatening damage to the spacecraft's thermal shield.

The US space agency said at mission control in Houston, Texas Sunday that final inspections had dispeled concerns about possible damage from the impact of space debris on the Discovery.

The shuttle launched from Cape Canaveral on July 4.
