NASA investigates landing problem of SpaceX rocket ahead of crewed launch
SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH. >> TRAINING IS ALMOST FINISHED FOR FOUR ASTRONAUTS WHO ARE NEXT TO FLY ON A SPACEX CREW DRAGON CAPSULE LAUNCHED BY A FALCON NINE THE FIRST TIME AN ASTRONAUT CAPSULE WILL BE REUSED THIS FLEW WHEN BOB BEHNKEN AND DOUG HURLEY BROUGHT BACK ASTRONAUT FLIGHTS TO THE SPACE COAST. AND ALTHOUGH SPACE SHUTTLES WERE REUSED IT WILL BE THE FIRST TIME ASTRONAUTS HAVE LAUNCHED ON A USED ROCKET. THEIR FALCON 9 LAUNCHED FOUR RESTAURANTS IN NOVEMBER. BUT THERE'S AN ISSUE WITH REUSING ROCKETS. THIS SPACEX ROCKET LIFTED OFF TWO WEEKS AGO. IT WAS NOT CARGO ASTRONAUTS BUT IT IS THE SAME KIND OF ROCKET THAT LAUNCHES ASTRONAUTS AND IT CRASHED WHEN IT TRIED TO LAND ON THE LANDING SHIP. SPACEX SAID TODAY THE CAUSE WAS RELATED TO WEAR AND TEAR. IT WAS THAT ROCKET'S SIXTH LAUNCH. >> A LITTLE BIT OF A HOLE DEVELOPED AND HOT GOES GOT TO WHERE IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE. >> THE MISSION MANAGERS INDICATE THEY BELIEVE THE ASTRONAUTS WILL BE SAFE AND SAFER THAN EVER BECAUSE THEY WILL NO LONGER BE ON THE ROCKET WHEN IT LANDS AND SOME SAFETY UPGRADES TO THE USED CAPSULE WILL GIVE THEM A GREATER SURVIVAL EDGE. LIFTOFF IS SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 20 BUT COULD BE DELAYED A FEW DAYS. STEWART: AT 5:30 YOU WILL HEA

NASA’s taking steps to make sure a landing problem after a recent SpaceX rocket launch does not endanger astronauts who’ll also be flying on a SpaceX rocket. Training is almost finished for four astronauts who are next to fly on a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It’ll be the first time an astronaut capsule will be reused. The capsule flew last year when Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley brought back astronaut flights to the Space Coast. Although space shuttles were reused, it’ll also be the first time astronauts have launched on a used rocket: Their Falcon 9 launched four astronauts in November. However, there is an issue with reusing rockets. The SpaceX rocket that lifted off two weeks ago was not carrying astronauts, but it is the same kind of rocket that launches astronauts. The rocket crashed when it tried to land on the landing ship. SpaceX said the cause was related to wear and tear. It was that rocket’s sixth launch. “A little bit of a hole developed and allowed hot gases to be where they’re not supposed to be and caused that engine to shut down,” SpaceX’s Benji Reed said.NASA is following the investigation carefully. “That’ll be something we’ll bring before our program control board and make sure we understand that anomaly before we go fly,” NASA’s Steve Stich said.Mission managers indicated on Monday that they believe the astronauts will be safer than ever and said that astronauts will no longer be on the rocket when it lands. Some safety upgrades to the used capsule will give them a greater survival edge. Liftoff is currently scheduled for April 20, but it could be delayed a few days.

SpaceX said the cause was related to wear and tear. It was that rocket’s sixth launch.

“A little bit of a hole developed and allowed hot gases to be where they’re not supposed to be and caused that engine to shut down,” SpaceX’s Benji Reed said.

NASA is following the investigation carefully.

Mission managers indicated on Monday that they believe the astronauts will be safer than ever and said that astronauts will no longer be on the rocket when it lands. Some safety upgrades to the used capsule will give them a greater survival edge.

Liftoff is currently scheduled for April 20, but it could be delayed a few days.
