Japan delays spysat launch

H-2A launch on flight 4 (NASDA) Japan has delayed Saturday's scheduled launch of two reconnaissance satellites for several days because of a problem with the H-2A launch vehicle. The launch, which had been scheduled for Saturday, will be delayed until no earlier than October 2 because of "abnormal data" in a system that controls the positioning of the vehicle's second stage, according to press reports. The vehicle will launch the Intelligence Gathering Satellites (IGS) 2A and 2B; one is an optical reconnaissance satellite and the other uses radar. This is the second pair of spysats Japan plans to deploy, after the launch in March of IGS 1A and 1B.
