SS/Loral 1300 satellite illustration (SS/Loral) Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) announced Tuesday that it has won a contract to build a second satellite for a mobile satellite communications company. SS/L will build TerreStar-2, a 1300-series spacecraft that will provide mobile communications services in the 2-GHz band. SS/L already won a contract to build TerreStar-1 for TerreStar Networks Inc. The company will use the two spacecraft, as well as a ground component, to provide voice and data services throughout North America. TerreStar-2 is scheduled for delivery in 2009, while TerreStar-1 is slated for launch in 2007. The contract is the fifth commercial satellite award so far this year for SS/L.
