Chandrayaan-1 suffering heating problems
Posted: Fri, Nov 28, 2008, 9:03 AM ET (1403 GMT)
Chandrayaan 1 illustration (ISRO) India's first lunar spacecraft, Chandrayaan-1, is overheating and will reduce its operations for a month and a half as a result. Temperatures inside the spacecraft have risen to 50 degrees Celsius, about 10 degrees higher than planned, because of the Sun-Moon alignment, ISRO officials explained. The increased temperature has caused project officials to change spacecraft operations, putting the spacecraft into a "summer break" mode through mid-January where only one instrument at a time will be used. The heating is not expected to cause any long-term problems for the spacecraft, which entered lunar orbit earlier this month.
