Atlas 5 launch of RBSP (ULA) An Atlas 5 rocket successfully launched a pair of NASA space science satellites on Thursday. The Atlas 5 401 lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 4:05 am EDT (0805 GMT) Thursday and placed the two Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) spacecraft into elliptical Earth orbits. The spacecraft will fly through the Earth's Van Allen Belts, studying the charged particles within them during their two-year mission. The launch had been planned for last week but was postponed because of technical issues and then weather, including storms associated with Hurricane Isaac.
