NASA announces reorganization
Posted: Fri, Jun 25, 2004, 11:40 AM ET (1540 GMT) NASA administrator Sean O'Keefe announced Thursday a major internal restructuring of the space agency, replacing existing enterprises with a streamlined set of directorates. Under the new plan, the existing structure of seven "strategic enterprises" will be consolidated into four "mission directorates": aeronautics, science, exploration systems, and space operations. The restructuring also creates a number of mission support offices, ranging the chief financial officer to a new director of advanced planning. As part of the personnel changes associated with the restructuring, Goddard Space Flight Center director Al Diaz will become the head of the new science directorate, while NASA associate administrator for space science Ed Weiler will take over at Goddard. The NASA field centers will report to the mission directorates, with increased oversight from NASA Headquarters in the form of "Headquarters Center Executives." The centers themselves will be largely unaffected by the change, although one center, Ames, will be moved from the former aeronautics enterprise to the science mission directorate.
