Posted: Sat, Aug 25, 2001, 9:58 AM ET (1358 GMT)
An Air Force general who once led the US Space Command has been nominated to be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Bush announced on Friday that General Richard Myers is his nominee to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Myers, who has been vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs, also previously was in charge of the US Space Command, suggesting to some a greater interest by Bush and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in missile defense and an expanded military use and defense of space assets. If Myers is confirmed by the Senate he will take over from Army General Henry Shelton on September 30.
