Posted: Sat, Sep 5, 2009, 3:10 PM ET (1910 GMT)
Falcon 1 launch on Flight 4 (SpaceX) SpaceX announced this week that it has won a contract to launch a new constellation of communications satellites for ORBCOMM. The contract, announced Thursday, covers the launch of 18 ORBCOMM Generation 2 (OG2) spacecraft on multiple Falcon 1e vehicles, starting as early as the fourth quarter of 2010 and continuing through 2014. ORBCOMM operates a fleet of low Earth orbit satellites that provide asset tracking and other data services; most of those satellites are now over a decade old and are due to be replaced. The OG2 satellites are being built by Sierra Nevada Corporation under a contract awarded last year.
