Proton launches AsiaSat 7

Proton launch of AsiaSat 7 (ILS) A Proton rocket successfully launched a communications satellite for a Hong Kong-based company on Saturday. The Proton M lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 2:10 pm EST Friday (1910 GMT Friday, 1:10 am local time Saturday) and released the AsiaSat 7, satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit a little over nine hours later. The satellite, a Space Systems/Loral 1300-series spacecraft, weighed a little more than 3,800 kilograms at launch and carries a payload of C- and Ku-band transponders. The satellite's owner, AsiaSat, will operate the satellite from 105.5 degrees east in GEO, providing television broadcast and VSAT services from the Middle East to Australasia. The launch was the eighth this year for the Proton, and the fifth commercial Proton flight of the year.
