SS/Loral 1300 satellite illustration (SS/Loral) Space Systems/Loral has won a contract to build two satellites that will provide broadband communications for Australia. The two satellites for Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN), designated NBN Co. 1A and 1B, will be built by SS/L for launch in 2015. The satellites will provide high-speed Internet access for remote regions of Australia not well served by terrestrial alternatives. The deal is valued at A$620 million (US$670 million); the overall NBN system is expected to cost about three times that.
