Carpenter, Scott in 2012 (J. Foust) Scott Carpenter, the second American to go into orbit, died Thursday at the age of 88. Carpenter suffered a stroke late last month and had been expected to make a full recovery, but family members said his condition worsened and he passed away Thursday morning in Denver. Carpenter was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, and he became the second American to orbit the Earth on the Aurora 7 mission in May 1962, his only trip in space. With his death, the last remaining living Mercury Seven astronaut is 92-year-old John Glenn.
