President Trump backs concept of "Space Force"
Posted: Sun, Mar 18, 2018, 11:22 AM ET (1522 GMT)
President Trump appeared to support the formation of a "space force" in a speech Tuesday, a concept his administration has previously opposed. Speaking at a Marine Corps base in San Diego, Trump noted that his administration's national security strategy recognized space as a warfighting domain, adding, "we may even have a space force." The idea of a separate military branch devoted to space has been pushed by the House, which called for the formation of a "space corps" within the Air Force in last year's defense authorization bill. The Senate opposed that provision, as did the Defense Department, and the bill instead called for studies of a space corps.
