Startup rocket company Astra to lift off from Cape Canaveral
Startup rocket company Astra held a static fire test at the Cape of its Rocket 3.3.
The young rocket company is aiming for its first Space Coast launch this month.
The Astra rocket is smaller than its fellow spacecraft at the Space Force Station and the Kennedy Space Center — but that’s part of the idea.
“Building a little and flying a little. So, start off with a small launch vehicle. It’s kind of the Model T, in a way. Where you get something to orbit fairly quickly, you can launch quite often. So getting many satellites to orbit over a period of time, you do so with a small team,” Don Platt of Florida Tech said.
That means their overhead is much smaller than the ULAs or SpaceXs out there.
The upcoming launch from the Cape is a big deal for Astra. It’ll be their first operational mission deploying several NASA research CubeSats — A type of small satellite that’s being used more and more.
“The small satellite industry is growing, as well as the launch vehicle industry. And that’s because these small satellites can be built relatively inexpensively and put up quickly,” Platt said.
While they might be the small rocket company on the Cape for now. It won’t last long, as there are similar companies gearing up to fill that growing need for quick and inexpensive launches.
