IT DOESN’T REFLECT WHAT AMERICA LOOKS LIKE WHICH MEANS WE HAVE TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF HISPANICS AND AFRICAN AMERICANS TO ENTER THE STEM FIELDS BECAUSE IF WE DON’T DO THAT. Just ahead of their new year, Omaha high schoolers got a motivational speech from a NASA astronaut. Jose Hernandez spoke to families at Buena Vista High School on Friday night — he worked as an engineer for NASA for more than a decade. Hernandez was a part of the 30th mission to the International Space Station. He says he wanted to fly in space ever since the first Hispanic American was chosen to travel into space.Now, he wants to encourage others to continue that legacy. "If you look at the representation with respect to minorities, Hispanic, African-American, it doesn't reflect what America looks like, which means we have to increase the number of Hispanics and African-Americans to enter the STEM fields. Because if we don't do that, we're missing out on a whole segment of talent and creativity," Hernandez said.
