Charli XCX is only in New York for six hours. “I quite like the craziness and the chaos, how my life can be,” she says, before adding, “until I’m like, I’m done!” The electropop sensation has a good reason for making such a quick trip from her native UK: She’s in town to celebrate H&M Studio’s A/W22 collection with a dinner at King, the cozy SoHo restaurant known for its daily-changing menu. Inspired by the space age, the Swedish retailer’s latest line presents a futuristic take on minimalism with otherworldly offerings including a fuchsia anorak jacket, neon sequin boots, and metallics galore, which leads me to wonder about another kind of travel: intergalactic.

Jet-setting between time zones is one thing, but would she ever go to space?

“I think there would be a bit of an ego death with going to space, because you kind of realize how insignificant all of your worries and your identity [are]. I struggle a bit with existentialism anyway, it’s why I don’t smoke weed—I can’t really handle my mind going there,” she tells me. “I’m not sure. I feel like there would obviously just be this part of me that would be like, You’re an idiot, you can’t miss out on this opportunity. But at the same time, I think the comedown of the harsh reality of life would be a bit hard to grapple with. I don’t know, I’m 50-50.”

When she asks me the same question, I’m of a similar mindset: What exactly would our lives look like from way up there?

“Maybe it’s good training to kind of, like, test yourself to still feel proud of the things you’ve done. Who knows? I don’t think Jeff Bezos is gonna be calling me anytime soon, so we don’t have that to worry about,” she says with a laugh.

Back here on earth, between Charli’s touring and events, one of her means of unwinding further cements her status as patron saint of the dance floor. While she counts movies and hot yoga (“My boyfriend [the 1975 drummer George Daniel] is really into hot yoga”) as ways to de-stress, she adds, “I actually really like to party. Now that I’m traveling more and doing shows, sometimes I can’t really party too much. I feel like, for me, truly relaxing and unwinding is when I can go and party until, like, 5 a.m. and not have to do anything the next day.”

And who’s on the playlist of a singer-songwriter responsible for so many pop hits? “I will sometimes put on maybe one or two of my own songs,” she says, calling out “Vroom Vroom” in particular, before noting she’s in a “techno-y dance phase” and is listening to a lot of Tim Green and Floating Points.

“I also really like this guy—he’s not making techno—The Dare. He’s based here. He has a song called ‘Girls,’ which really, like, goes off at parties,” she says.

Perhaps as a result of working with stylist Chris Horan, and counting Fran Drescher and The Nanny among her style inspirations (“Every look that she has in that show is just, like, my dream wardrobe”), she maintains that every function deserves a fashion moment—no matter the venue.

“Generally, I’m a house party girl, but I still like to turn out a look,” she says. “Honestly, I’m really into my Victoria Beckham—Posh Spice—little black dress. I’m in my little black dress era at the moment ’cause you can’t go wrong.”
