Soyuz launches Progress spacecraft

Soyuz launch (Energia file photo) A Soyuz booster successfully launched a Progress cargo spacecraft for the International Space Station early Friday. The booster lifted off from Baikonur at 9:48 pm EDT Thursday (0148 GMT Friday) and placed the Progress M-48 spacecraft into orbit. The Progress, also known as Progress 12, is carrying nearly three tons of cargo for the station, including supplies for both the current Expedition 7 crew on the station and the new Expedition 8 crew scheduled for launch in October. The Progress is scheduled to dock with the station Saturday at 11:45 pm EDT (0345 GMT Sunday).
